OUT. in quarantine Demo & Concept Art

“How you survive the days in is how you get out”

“OUT. in quarantine” is a spin-off game of the original “OUT.”. Now that our recluse and weary protagonist “Vee” is forced to live in lock-down just like most of us. With no chance to resume life as per usual in the outside world in the near future, with a lot of worries, uncertainty and a lot of time on her hand.  How will “Vee” survive quarantine days on her own?

This is a demo of a narrative puzzle/adventure video game I’m developing for the Game Design and Development Specialization Capstone at Michigan State University via Coursera. Just as the original game; “OUT. in quarantine” is an interactive puzzle game developed for mobile platforms.

It is a serious game that discusses serious topics such as loneliness, loss, trauma and how to handle the sorrows of the modern life. Moreover, in the spin-off, the game discusses the social aftermath and psychological ramifications of the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic.

As a Graphic Designer and Artist, I focused in this demo on conveying the game world’s aesthetics and showing the stark contrast between the outdoor environment and the indoors. I included 5 original artworks of mine using gouache as my main medium to achieve the opaque illustrative look, the paintings are as follows:

Outside World:
1. Playground (acrylic gouache on paper).
2. Street (acrylic gouache on paper).
3. Office (gouache, watercolor markers on paper)

Indoors:
4. Homebound (acrylic gouache on paper).
5. Door (acrylic gouache on paper).

The dialog and HUD elements in the game feature 2 main parameters: A day counter, and a Mood-o-meter to track the player’s mood changes throughout the day. I will expand on the gameplay mechanics and other elements in later iterations.

While interpreting this visual concept into this 3D prototype, I maintained the rich color palette throughout the scene. and designed the ambient lighting to match the moody sunset feel.

The player can walk around the space, and explore some interactive elements that add to the narrative and allude to the game’s mission.
